What is PEMF?
PEMF stands for pulsed electromagnetic field, a source of energy used to support the body’s own repair processes. It works on cell function, which plays a part in how the body regenerates and rebuilds through energy restoration. Though the equipment is modern, the underlying idea of using magnetic fields therapeutically has been around a very long time.
How it works
Low levels of electromagnetic energy are emitted towards your body by the machine. These can be focused on the areas where you want support, such as an injured joint or muscle.
The pulses act at a cellular level, and the intention is to stimulate cell and tissue regeneration. It is entirely non invasive — you feel very little, sometimes a faint tingle or nothing at all.
Benefits
What to expect
Before
No preparation needed. You stay fully clothed — comfortable clothes without heavy metal fastenings are ideal.
During
You lie on the mat and relax for the whole session. Most people feel very little; some notice a faint pulsing or tingling where the field is strongest.
After
Get up and carry on with your day. Some people feel noticeably relaxed afterwards, which is worth bearing in mind if you’ve booked it late in the day.
Stacking it
PEMF is one of the easiest treatments to combine. Booking it alongside red light or hyperbaric in the same visit is very common.
Who it’s often used for
People come to us about all sorts of things. These are the ones that come up most often with this treatment — if yours isn’t listed, ask us.
Before you book
PEMF is not suitable if you have a pacemaker, implanted defibrillator, insulin pump, cochlear implant or any other electronic implant. Please tell us at booking rather than on the day.
It is also not recommended during pregnancy, or for anyone with epilepsy. If you have any metal implants, let your practitioner know so they can advise.
PEMF FAQs
Can I feel anything?
Usually very little. Depending on the setting you may notice a light pulsing or tingling sensation, or nothing at all. Feeling nothing doesn’t mean it isn’t working.
Do I need to undress?
No. PEMF works through clothing, so you stay fully dressed on the mat.
How often should I come?
For a specific complaint, two or three sessions a week for a few weeks is a typical starting point, then less often to maintain. Your practitioner will suggest a pattern at your consultation.
Is it safe with metal implants?
Metal implants such as plates, pins or joint replacements are usually fine, but electronic implants are not. Always tell us what you have so we can advise properly.
